Is your child exhibiting difficult or potentially harmful behaviour?

Difficult behaviour can be the result of any number of influences, and a behaviour disorder is often caused by more than one factor. Behaviour disorders can be categorized into two main types: conduct disorders and oppositional defiant disorders. Conduct disorders can be characterized by a disrespect for authority, little regard for the basic rights of others, defiance of major societal rules, physical or verbal aggression, intimidation and/or truancy. Signs of an oppositional defiant disorder may include argumentativeness, a tendency to blame others, frequent tantrums, a propensity to anger easily, and/or bullying.

What are our next steps?

To uncover the motivation behind your child’s conduct, we’ll start with an assessment for treatment that will include an evaluation of their behavior, emotions, attitudes, and self-esteem. This would be done using specialized questionnaires and interviews, following which an individualized treatment plan can be developed.

Once we better understand the motivators behind your child’s behaviour, we can begin working towards a solution which may include individual and/or family therapy. Therapy sessions are emotionally supportive, solution-focused dialogues with cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) as their foundation. Often the most effective treatment for behaviour disorders requires the involvement of both parents and children/adolescents. Our goals will be to:

  • replace the problem behaviours with more pro-social behavour
  • implement natural consequences for poor behaviour
  • provide opportunities to practice new behaviours.
  • learn new methods of respectful communication
  • improve family patterns of interaction, relationship building, limit setting
  • establish effective parenting strategies

As daunting as it may seem, there are ways to manage your child’s or adolescent’s difficult behaviour. If you would like to learn more and take the first step, please contact us to set up an appointment
