Gender & Sexuality

Are you concerned because your child/teen…

Are you concerned because your teen…

$

… makes consistent statements that they are the opposite gender or routinely states that he/she is the opposite sex?

$

… consistently and routinely rejects typically gendered behaviour?

$

…has psychological and/or physical discomfort with the outward appearance of their sex and the internal experience of their gender identity?

$

... cross-dresses, asks to socially transition (in other words, transition to the affirmed gender’s pronouns and bathroom) or requests to medically transition via hormone therapy and/or sex-change surgery

Please understand that these questions serve only as a starting point. There are no universally agreed-upon signs of gender dysphoria or indications of youth questioning their sexual orientation. How people experience their gender and sexuality is informed by external forces such as culture, religion and ethnicity, and this can cause symptoms to vary widely from individual to individual, making it difficult to know how your child will present. Still, people who are part of a sexual and/or gender minority experience a higher prevalence of mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, and stress as a result of their internal conflict and the impact on their relationships with others. Accessing help is essential.

Is your child/teen exploring their sexual orientation or gender identity?

If your child or adolescent is questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity, you can support them by first reassuring them that it’s ok to do so, and that their questions are normal. Help your child recognize that gender and sexuality are among the many things that make each person unique, and that you will support them on their journey.

The journey of self-discovery can be challenging for LGBTQ2S+ young people, as well as for their parents and guardians. It can bring a mix of emotions that may include feelings of isolation, fear, shame or exclusion. We can assure you that you are not alone, many other young people have had experiences and feelings similar, and support is available for you and your family.

 What should we do next?

In the case of children and youth, it’s most important for family members and others to resist the temptation to steer them—be it gently or harshly—as that can cause lifelong trauma-related stress. If you and your teen would like help in navigating their questions and challenges related to sexual orientation and/or gender identity, please contact us to set up an appointment.

We can help you and your family together to support your teen, helping them to feel safe and supported by connecting you with the resources you need while providing counselling and therapy during this journey.
